3. Organization3.1 AdministrationIt is proposed that NoSerC is operated by DNMI. The project manager will be Dr. Roar
Skålin The centre will have a staff of two computer engineers, formally employed by the IT division at DNMI. These will work closely with the Research Division at DNMI, in particular the scientists involved in climate research, and with the computer engineers responsible for databases and archiving systems at DNMI. The centre should have a steering committee appointed by the Research Council, representing the main user groups of the centre. The user groups have proposed the following members of the steering committee: Professor
Trond Iversen, UiO representing RegClim Based on the cost sharing of the project (see section 5), we suggest that one member of the steering committee represent DNMI, and we propose Professor Thor Erik Nordeng Director of Research, DNMI Professor Sigbjørn Grønås, UiB, is proposed as the deputy representative from RegClim. For the other steering committee members, no deputies are proposed at this point. The project manager is responsible for
The steering committee (SC) approves, and if required, changes the project plan for centre. This includes to prioritise among the different tasks and, to the extent required, with in a task. The project manager reports to the SC on the issues listed above, and the SC shall approve all reports to be sent to the Research Council. 3.2 Technical mattersThe equipment for storing climate data will be located in connection to the main national high performance computer, to be established by NOTUR at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. This computer will be used by most of the scientist involved in climate modelling in Norway. It is easily available from all institutions involved in climate research in Norway, through the high capacity network provided by Uninett. Furthermore, by attaching the equipment to this computer system, we take advantage of the national infrastructure for high performance computing and thus increase the value of the investments already made by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian universities. The NOTUR consortium consists of NTNU, University of Oslo, University of Bergen, University of Tromsø, DNMI, SINTEF, Statoil, Telenor and Viewtech ASA. Under a contract with the Research Council of Norway, NOTUR is responsible for operation of the Norwegian national high performance computing infrastructure for the period 2000-2003. |
